Biloxi, Mississippi-based news station WLOX covered the inaugural Mississippi Health Disparities Conference in a feature titled “COVID-19 adds urgency to conference on health disparities in Mississippi” that was broadcast over the local cable TV network on Wednesday, August 4, 2021.
Incorporating interviews from the director of Mississippi INBRE, Dr. Mohamed Elasri, and the director of the Mississippi INBRE Telenutrition Center, Dr. Jennifer Lemacks, the feature covered the main aspects of the conference, including its mission to eliminate health disparities such as obesity and diabetes in the state. Not only that, but it related how these health disparities increase the risk of COVID-19 contraction within the Mississippi population and how this raised the urgency of holding the conference.
Principle to this mission, WLOX also covered the vaccination event held by Mississippi INBRE’s sister organization, My Brother’s Keeper, through the Open Arms Healthcare Center. $50 Visa Gift Cards were given out to South Mississippians who chose to receive their COVID-19 vaccination at MHD2021.
