Past Mississippi INBRE Hosted Conferences

Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference 2022

The Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), in conjunction with the Mississippi Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), hosted the inaugural Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR Conference 2022 on July 28, 2022, at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Featuring over 400 attendees and 171 presentations in both oral and poster format, the conference was a major success.

Owing to this success was the conference’s unique structure. Bringing students, researchers, and public health professionals together, the meeting featured both a STEM track and the second annual Mississippi Health Disparities 2022 (MHD2022). Hosted by Mississippi INBRE, MHD is an annual meeting focused on public health research, with the overall goal to eliminate health disparities in Mississippi. Collaboration amongst these varied groups is rare and made for a day full of scientific breakthroughs and discovery.

Mississippi Academy of Sciences 2022

The 86th Annual Mississippi Academy of Sciences Meeting, sponsored by Mississippi INBRE, was held March 31st – April 1st, 2022, at the Mississippi Coast Convention Center in Biloxi, Mississippi. There were over 1,200 attendees at this year’s meeting, including students, faculty and staff from across Mississippi. The conference boasted over 400 scientific presentations in both oral and poster format. Mississippi INBRE Student Scholars and funded faculty researchers were among those who presented. The meeting hosted an additional 19 speakers, including a presentation on the COVID-19 pandemic in Mississippi by Mississippi State Epidemiologist Paul Byers, MD.

Research presented at this conference was divided into 13 divisions: agriculture and plant sciences; cellular, molecular and developmental biology; chemistry and chemical engineering; ecology and evolutionary biology; geology and geography; health sciences; history and philosophy of science; marine and atmospheric sciences; mathematics, computer sciences and statistics; physics and engineering; psychology and social science; science education; and zoology and entomology.

Mississippi Health Disparities Conference 2021

The Mississippi IDeA Network of Biological Research Excellence held its inaugural Mississippi Health Disparities Conference on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in Biloxi, MS. The conference brought together Mississippi State Department of Health officials, medical industry leaders, and students from INBRE’s summer scholar programs for presentations, workshops, and a research poster session.

MHD2021 featured a presentation by Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs concerning the effect of COVID-19 on Mississippi, particularly in the light of the new Delta variant of the virus and the health disparities that make its impact so drastic on the population. Additionally, My Brother’s Keeper, INBRE’s sister organization, offered vaccinations to locals and conference attendees for a $50 gift card through its Open Arms Healthcare Center branch.

MHD2021 boasted over 300 attendees and is considered a major success in paving the way for Mississippians to address health disparities in the state, such as diabetes and obesity. Furthermore, it helped to provide a focal point from which Mississippi medical leaders can fight the spread of COVID-19 within the state’s population.

Besides Dr. Thomas Dobbs, the conference featured keynote speakers Dr. Penny Ralston, director of the Center on Better Health and Life for Underserved Populations at Florida State University, and Mississippi State Health Official Dr. Victor D. Sutton.

Mississippi Academy of Sciences 2021

Mississippi INBRE sponsored the 85^th annual Mississippi Academy of Sciences Meeting, held on August 5-6, 2021, at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in Biloxi, MS. The meeting hosted over 100 presentations as well as over 300 speakers despite the COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that over 600 attended the conference, including Mississippi State Department of Health officials, faculty, staff, and students from throughout the state.

Mississippi State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs received the MAS Presidential Award for his support of the conference over the years and presented an update on COVID-19’s effect on Mississippians as well as the United States as a whole.

MAS is the premiere conference for scientists across Mississippi concerning many different subjects, and its 85^th meeting was no exception.

2020 Mississippi INBRE Outreach Scholars Symposium

Mississippi INBRE Telenutrition Center Outreach Scholars Symposium was held virtually on July 28th, 2020. Twenty outreach scholars presented ten research posters in two concurrent sessions. USM faculty and community partners served as judges at the symposium. This year's Top Scholars award was shared by Anna Shepard-Morgan Monroy and Reyes Willis-Raven Mingo, who will be presenting their research at the SE Regional Conference in Puerto Rico. The virtual symposium also included announcement of scholars for eight other award categories and ended with Dr. Jennifer Lemacks's final remarks.

This conference boasted 489 scientific presentations in both oral and poster format. In addition, the conference hosted and additional 12 speakers. There were over 1000 attendees at this conference including students, faculty and staff from across Mississippi

Mississippi IDeA Conference 2019

The 2019 Mississippi IDeA Conference was held on August 2, 2019 at the Hilton Jackson, Jackson, Miss. More than 350 faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students gathered for scientific sessions that covered the areas of Obesity & Cardiometabolic Diseases, Infectious Disease & Immunology, Neuroscience, Cancer, Biotechnology, Health Disparities: Behavior Management and Community Engagement, and Integrating Omics Technologies. There were 139 poster and 29 oral presentations, as well as 13 graduate and professional school exhibitors.

Mississippi INBRE Symposium 2016

The Mississippi INBRE Symposium 2016 was held on July 28-29, 2016 in Jackson, MS. During this symposium, participants had the opportunity to interact with Mississippi INBRE students and faculty from across the state of Mississippi. This interaction is essential in our efforts to enhance the biomedical research and training throughout the state. Southeast Regional IDeA Meeting 2015

The 3rd Biennial Southeast Regional IDeA Meeting was held on November 11-13, 2015. Hosted by Mississippi INBRE, this year’s meeting was held in Biloxi, Mississippi at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino. Around 400 guests from 55 institutions, including 109 students, enjoyed scientific sessions in the largest resort in the Southeast to receive the AAA Four Diamond award. The Beau Rivage offered a wonderful backdrop to showcase some of the best research the Southeast Regional IDeA Program has to offer. With seven states being represented in over 200 poster presentations and 40 oral presentations, every researcher was certain to find something of interest. American Society for Microbiology 2015 South Central Branch Meeting

The American Society for Microbiology South Central Branch is comprised of microbiologists from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Hosted by Mississippi INBRE, this year's meeting was held in Hattiesburg, MS at the Trent Lott National center on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi on September 18-19, 2015.

On March 11th, Mississippi INBRE hosted a virtual bioinformatics workshop at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. This workshop trained 11 students.

Mississippi INBRE conducts “Traveling Bioinformatics Workshops” at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions with instruction by our Bioinformatics Coordinator, Dr. Gyan Sahukhal. The Mississippi INBRE Bioinformatics Workshops are designed to give undergraduate students hands-on training on the basics of bioinformatics to prepare them for advanced biomedical graduate study. This training activity aims to enable the students to handle the basic genomics and proteomics tools in order to analyze and interpret biological data

2/22/20 Grant Writing Workshop 2020

'Write Winning NIH Grant Proposals' was presented by John D. Robertson, PhD on February 22nd, 2020 from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum in Biloxi, MS. This workshop covered critical steps for organizing and planning your proposal, understanding the role and mindset of your reviewers, a 4-paragraph rhetorical strategy for writing a compelling Specific aims or Overview & Objective page, and specific strategies and tips for each major section of a grant proposal.

This event was organized by Mississippi INBRE and all participants received an extensive handout, as well as a copy of The Grant Application Writer's Workbook NIH Version. Meals were provided.

11/9/19 GRE Workshop for Mississippi Valley State University

On November 9th, 2019, Mississippi INBRE sponsored a GRE Workshop presented by The Learning Center, MSU for students at Mississippi Valley State University.

During the Saturday workshop, instructors gave an overview of the exam and an in-depth explanation of each section of the GRE: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. Attendees were taught test-taking strategies, ran through example problems, and given a GRE study guide to take home. Mississippi INBRE is grateful to each of the wonderful instructors, Ms. Abigail Voller, Mrs. Lauren Holifield, and Mr. Justin Smith, and to the MVSU coordinator, Dr. Ikenga, for their support.

By doing these workshops, Mississippi INBRE supports undergraduate students preparing for graduate programs and helps to demystify the application process.

Dr. Chris Papasian presented the one-day seminar, Writing and Publishing High-Impact Research Manuscripts, on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the Westin Jackson in Jackson, Miss. The workshop began at 8:30 and concluded at 5:00 p.m.

The Scientific Writing Workshop covered preparing to publish, preparing a manuscript and submission and review.

This workshop was open to funded Mississippi INBRE Research Grant awardees and other invited faculty members.

3/9/18 Write Winning NIH Grant Proposals - Dr. John D. Robertson

On Friday, March 9, 2018, 23 researchers gathered together at the Westin Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi for a grant writing workshop hosted by Mississippi INBRE. This workshop, featuring Dr. John D. Robertson of Grant Writers" Seminars & Workshops, led attendees through the process of writing grant proposals from the initial phase of developing an idea through the entire process of preparing the application. This full-day workshop allowed these researchers to walk away better equipped to write grant proposals.

In conjunction with the MIssissippi Academy of Sciences, Mississippi INBRE hosted the Metagenomics to Functional Microbiome Bioinformatice Symposium on February 23-24, 2017. Organized by Shahid Karim, Mississippi INBRE Bioinformatics Director, this symposium was available to over 700 attendees of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences annual meeting.

Mississippi INBRE hosted an R15 Grant Writing Workshop on June 8, 2016 at the Hilton Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi. Seventeen faculty and graduate students from across the state of Mississippi attended this workshop to improve R15 grant writing techniques.

Mississippi INBRE hosted a Grant Administrators’/Program Managers’ Workshop in conjunction with the Southeast Regional IDeA Meetin 2015 on November 12, 2015 at the Beau Rivage Hotel & Casino in Biloxi, Miss. Around 40 attendees learned about the Uniform Guidance from the Office of Management and Budget, which pertains to Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards.

Mississippi INBRE hosted an R15 Grant Writing Workshop on August 10, 2015 at the Fairview Inn in Jackson, Mississippi. Seventeen faculty and graduate students from across the state of Mississippi attended this workshop to improve R15 grant writing techniques.

5/21-22/15 The University of Southern Mississippi Bioinformatics Workshop

On May 21-22, 2015, Mississippi INBRE hosted a bioinformatics workshop at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. This workshop trained 43 undergraduate students from across the state of Mississippi.

2/26-27/15 Mississippi INBRE Tick and Tick-Borne Disease Symposium

In conjunction with the MIssissippi Academy of Sciences, Mississippi INBRE hosted the Tick and Tick-Borne Disease Symposium on February 26-27, 2015. Organized by Shahid Karim, Mississippi INBRE Bioinformatics Director, this symposium was available to over 700 attendees of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences annual meeting.

11/1-4/14 Rust College Bioinformatics Workshop

On November 1-4, 2014, Mississippi INBRE hosted a bioinformatics workshop at Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss. This workshop trained. 14 faculty members from Rust College and Byhalia High School.

Mississippi INBRE hosted a ddPCR Training Session on July 16, 2014 at The University of Southern Mississippi. This training session was available to faculty, staff and students on the new ddPCR system purchased for the Mississippi INBRE facility.

Community Engagement Speaker Series

University of Southern Mississippi faculty, staff, and Mississippi INBRE funded researchers joined together on November 5th from 11:50 A.M. to 1 P.M. in Joseph Greene Hall, Room 104 for presentations, networking, and refreshments. Speakers Dr. Holly Huye and Dr. Jennifer L. Lemacks discussed what the big IDeA is with community-engaged research at Southern Miss.

IDeA programs are Institutional Development Awards funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. IDeA programs foster the development, coordination and sharing of research resources and expertise that will expand research opportunities and increase the number of competitive investigators in IDeA-eligible states. The Mississippi IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence and Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research are two IDeA programs that support community-engaged research at Southern Miss and other institutions.

Open Arms Healthcare Center - Grand Opening of New Hattiesburg Site

My Brother’s Keeper, Inc. and Mississippi INBRE were proud to announce the opening of Open Arms Healthcare Center's newest facility in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on October 1, 2021.

Open Arms Healthcare Center was established to provide affordable and quality healthcare services to Mississippi’s most vulnerable populations. The new location is a state-of-the-art clinical and research facility is expanding our ability to provide quality, culturally competent health services with a focus on Community Health Solutions that work for everyone.

The “Grand Opening” occurred on October 1, 2021 from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Open Arms Healthcare Center, 1711 Hardy Street, Hattiesburg, Mississippi 39401. Food and drinks were provided free of charge to Mississippi INBRE funded faculty and staff, as well as members of Open Arms Healthcare Center and My Brother's Keeper, Inc.

Community Health Speaker Series - Dr. David Buys

On March 5, 2020, the Mississippi INBRE Telenutrition Center hosted the second seminar of the Community Health Speaker Series. Dr. David R. Buys, from Mississippi State University, delivered a presentation titled “Cooperative Extension and Obesity Prevention: Toward a Policy, Systems, and Environment Approach to Building Healthier Communities.”

The Community Health Speaker Series aims to deliver content on community health and behaviors in relation to disease prevention among Mississippians. Dr. Buys’ work stems from exploring social causes of health and disease. He joined MSU Extension in 2014 and has tackled issues such as obesity and opioid misuse in the state of Mississippi.

Community Health Speaker Series - Dr. Ian Thompson

On January 31st, 2020, the Mississippi INBRE Telenutrition Center hosted the Community Health Speaker Series. Dr. Ian Thompson, from the Tribal Historic Preservation Office for the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, gave a seminar titled “Choctaw Food: Remembering the Land, Rekindling Ancient Knowledge."

The Community Health Speaker Series aims to deliver content on community health and behaviors in relation to disease prevention among Mississippians. Dr. Thompson's presentation drew upon Indigenous knowledge to improve health and quality of life in today's world. He is also a certified Choctaw Community Language Instructor and a bison rancher.

USM University Forum - Sonia Shah

On November 12th, 2019 Mississippi INBRE sponsored Sonia Shah, an award-winning investigative journalist, as the featured speaker for the University of Southern Mississippi’s University Forum. Her presentation, “Pandemic,” was held at 6:30 pm in the Thad Cochran Center Ballrooms.

USM’s forum schedule says, “Sonia Shah is an investigative journalist who writes about science, human rights, and international politics. Her work has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, and Foreign Affairs. Shah’s most recent book, Pandemic: Tracking Contagions from Cholera to Ebola and Beyond, explores the origins of epidemics and draws parallels between the story of cholera and the pathogens that threaten humankind today. Pandemic was a finalist for the 2017 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in science/technology, the New York Public Library’s Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism, and the National Association for Science Writers’ Science in Society Award. It was also a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice. Shah has been featured on CNN and her TEDTalk, “Three Reasons We Still Haven’t Gotten Rid of Malaria,” has been viewed over one million times. Shah is currently working on her fifth book, The Next Great Migration.”

American Society of Microbiology 2019 South Central Branch Meeting

The ASM South Central Branch Annual Meeting, sponsored by Mississippi INBRE, was held November 1-2, 2019 at the University of Mississippi.

The annual ASM-SCB meeting attracts 180-200 faculty, postdocs, and students from Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. The meeting provides an opportunity for regional networking and collaboration. A full program of events included scientific sessions, keynote speaker presentation, student awards competition, poster session, education session, Friday evening reception, and business meetings.

Dr. Joel Kostka, Georgia Tech University, a microbial ecologist, was the keynote speaker.

2nd Annual Mississippi McNair Scholars Research Symposium & Graduate Fair

On October 4, 2019, the McNair Scholars Program hosted their 2nd Annual Mississippi McNair Scholars Research Symposium and Graduate Fair at the Thad Cochran Center on the University of Southern Mississippi's campus.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO program funded at 151 institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico by the U.S. Department of Education. It is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. McNair participants are either first-generation college students with financial need, or members of a group that is traditionally underrepresented in graduate education and have demonstrated strong academic potential. The goal of the McNair Scholars Program is to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented segments of society.

McNair Scholars from USM, Ole Miss, Jackson State, and Delta State were invited to present their research and participate in the graduate school fair.

This year’s event was held on March 23, 2018 on the USM campus. Attendees included not only faculty and students within the School of Polymer Science, but also corporate representatives, USM alumni, and representative from other institutions in the State.

Posters in the Rotunda, sponsored by Mississippi INBRE, is a state-wide event promoting research in Mississippi. This year’s event was held on March 20, 2018 in at the Capitol in Jackson, Mississippi. Thirty-three of the top undergraduate researchers in the state represented eight state universities at this event. Universities represented included Alcorn State University, Delta State University, Jackson State University, Mississippi State University, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi Valley State University, The University of Mississippi and The University of Southern Mississippi.

Mississippi Honors Conference 2018

The Mississippi Honors Conference, hosted by Mississippi INBRE, was a two-day conference held on February 2-3, 2018. True to it’s theme “Diversity in Mississippi,” attendees represent every honors college in the state as these students have the opportunity to present their research at a professional conference.

5th Annual Applied Polymer Technology Extension Consortium Symposium

The University of Southern Mississippi Polymer Science Department hosted the 5th Annual Applied Polymer Technology Extension Consortium Symposium on November 13th, 2017. This symposium was attended by around 90 undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, faculty and corporate representatives. The purpose was to offer networking opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students with polymer-focused research and tackle fundamental issues in polymer science and engineering.

This one-day meeting features both oral and poster presentations, a career panel with industry and government representatives and a social networking event. The symposium’s key-note speaker was Dr. Timothy White from the Air Force Research Laboratory.

American Society of Microbiology 2017 South Central Branch Meeting

The ASM South Central Branch Annual Meeting, hosted by Dr. Dan Voth and Dr. Jon Blevins from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and sponsored by Mississippi INBRE, was held October 19-21, 2017. 16th Research Symposium on Students' Summer Research Series, Tougaloo College

Tougaloo College’s Natural Science Division hosted the 16th Research Symposium on Students’ Summer Research Series on October 13-14, 2017. This symposium, hosted by MIssissippi INBRE featured 27 poster presentations along with 12 oral presentation.

At this symposium, Mississippi INBRE Academic-Year Scholar, Nii Commey was awarded first place in the oral presentations for his research entitled, “Effect of DCLK1 on the Proliferation and Stemness of Colorectal Cancer Cells.”

Southeast Regional IDeA Meeting 2017

The 2017 Southeast Regional IDeA Conference held on October 11-13, 2017 in Morgantown, West Virginia allowed Mississippi INBRE to send a group of students and faculty to present their research and network with other researchers. Mississippi INBRE is proud of our Scholars, faculty and staff who attended the Southeast Regional IDeA meeting in Morgantown, WV. This year’s group includes 12 students, 2 faculty and 3 INBRE staff members representing 9 institutions.

USM Congressional Staffers Visit

The University of Southern Mississippi hosted it’s annual Congressional Staffers Visit on August 31-September 3, 2017 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses. This year’s visit, sponsored by Mississippi INBRE, brought around 30 congressional staffers to campus to learn about offerings at USM.

USM-UMMC Annual Doctoral Seminar

The University of Southern Mississippi in conjunction with the University of Mississippi Medical Center hosted their Annual Doctoral Seminar on June 9, 2017 at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus. This year’s seminar, sponsored by Mississippi INBRE, featured scholarly development and networking for 50-70 nursing doctoral students and faculty from both Universities.

Southeastern Medical Device Association Annual Meeting

The Southeastern Medical Device Association hosted their annual on April 26-27, 2017 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. Mississippi INBRE was proud to be a sponsor at this event which inspires collaboration and innovation in the Southeast Region of the U.S. This conference averages around 500 attendees each year.

The 77th Annual Mississippi Academy of Sciences meeting, sponsored by Mississippi INBRE, was held February 20-21, 2014 at the Thad Cochran Center on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi.
